Candlemas Part II: Music

The Candlemas ceremonies and Mass which the Ordianariate group shared with the parish at Holy Rood were beautifully served by the Newman Consort‘s musical efforts. Of the several options provided in the Missal for the initial rites, we elected to sing Victoria’s setting of the Nunc dimittis, the Canticle of Simeon, with its antiphon ‘A light to lighten the Gentiles…’, at the lighting of the candles. Then, for the procession, the choir sang William Byrd’s setting of one of theantiphons which may accompany it, Adorna thalamum tuum, Sion, ‘Adorn thy bridal chamber, O Sion’. Then followed the introit Suscepimus, from the Graduale Romanum. The other antiphons of the Mass were sung to the tones of the Simple English Propers. The Mass setting itself was Lotti’s Mass for Three Voices, which we have used before, but which bears repetition.
